The Practice was appointed from a shortlist of architects to refurbish the Centre following a severe flood which hit Gloucestershire particularly badly and left the Church Centre in over three feet of standing water.
The former Victorian school house in the town’s conservation area had been a focal point for community activities for many years but needed to be completely stripped out following the flood damage. This was also seen as an opportunity to re-order and extend the building and WWADP’s scheme has dramatically enhanced the entrance to the Centre and provided a welcoming foyer, improved internal layout, flexible meeting rooms, catering facilities and refurbishment of the main hall in order to host events and functions for the Church and the wider community.
The project involved full re-wiring of the building, the installation of underfloor heating, and a series of flood alleviation measures. A vibrant and uncompromisingly contemporary scheme has been created that breathes new life into the centre and extends its appeal to a broad cross-section of the community.
