Inclusivity, accessibility & equity in the design of post Covid-19 housing – A Round Table Discussion

This afternoon we hosted a virtual Round-Table event on the subject of ‘Inclusivity, accessibility & equity in the design of post Covid-19 housing’.

Attended by a number of housing associations, charities, and stakeholder representatives, the discussion covered many of the common design challenges facing the sector.

Hosted jointly by West Waddy and Archadia, the meeting was chaired by Architect and academic Ralph Saull, with presentations by Architect Kathryn Gundry and Urban Design Associate Johnathan Headland.

Kathryn presented Archadia’s ongoing research into the impact of Covid-19 on housing design, particularly in the contexts of supported living, extra care, and older people’s housing typologies. Johnathan picked up the thread of discussion moving from the domestic setting, to the scale of the urban realm and shared best practice advice for public space design.

We then enjoyed a fascinating round-table discussion reflecting on possible design solutions such as adaptable interiors and integrated technology all of which of course come with a price tag. This morning the Government announced an extra £68 million will be made available through the Disabled Facilities Grant which will help thousands more disabled people to access grants to improve their homes so they can live independently. As an outcome of the round table discussion and through future events, we are aiming to compile design guidance for post-covid home design that helps outline where money can be best spent to create innovative, resilient and equitable housing. Stand by for future posts on this topic!

We would like to say a massive thank you to all guests and contributors and we look forward to seeing you at the next round table discussion.
